Why is my husband fungas toe nail turning black?

My hubby has thick thick did i mention thick toe nails, its fungas i think anyways now the big toe nail is turning black underneth, what can cause that and is there any home redmedies that can cure fungi toe nails? Dr said all they can do is pills but it can cause liver damage and it takes a year to show any improvement. Hes a pool guy and hes feet are always wet and thats what caused it.
