I would recommend seeing a specialist because its not going to get any better. I have had 2 before and once i had them sorted it was so much better and they were healed withing about 2/3 weeks. If you don't your not going to be doing any running until you do.How do I stop the pain in my ingrown toe nail?
I'm sorry but anyone who voted this the best answer is an idiot because this answer says ';GO SEE SOMEONE WHO CAN TELL YOU WHAT TO DO WITH YOUR TOE'; which does not answer my question. thanks.

I've got them really bad as well and mine swelled up and kept pussing. I just kept leaving it alone and let it heal itself, and once it was healed I took a bath and cut the nails back in the corner. It's really the only way I know how to keep them from hurting and if you buy cuticle cutters and soak the feet very well first, it doesn't hurt to cut them back. But I would see a specialist if you want to run, because if the toe gets too bad then it kills to put on shoes. Good luck.
P.S. Even if the toe fills up with puss, DON'T POP IT. It just makes for more healing time.
Here's a tip....
If you feel an ingrown toenail coming on...cut a V shape into the centre of the toenail!
This encourages the nail to grow and replace the V...ultimately moving the nail away from the side of the toe..i.e place of pain! So it will promote healing!
Go see a specialist too.... they will usually do this for you! They will also put antiseptic dressing on the toe along with a gauze pushed in under the toenail to raise it from it's bed!
I've had them quite a bit, and if you just leave it...it's possible that it will go on for months! So get it sorted! :)
I have had the same thing for many years and the only answer is to see a chiropodist, sorry but you may need a small section of the nail removed, you wont look behind you if you do. I have had three done and have had no problems now for about 5 years.
well when i had an ingrown toe nail i went to a specialist and he cut it all out and put it in a bandage and it healed in about 4 days so you should go you will be able to swim and run just give it bout 4 days
hope this helped
go to the specialist, but if that takes some time, then there's this like medical string that you can put under your toenail to stop it ingrowing any further
you're not gonna be able to swim and run if you just leave it!... go to a specialist
