What is the best way to remove an ingrown toe nail from home?

Ok, I know it's going to be painful. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to make the process a little easier?

Last time I had an army medic fix it during a field operation with a leatherman. Wish that guy was here right now. What is the best way to remove an ingrown toe nail from home?
You have probably already clipped out the nail but, just in case and possibly for future cases, here is a really good way to do it.

1. soak the foot in warm water for about 15 - 20 minutes. Add epsoms salts to the water if you have it. It makes a difference all the way around, helps pull out infection too if there is any.

Soaking softens the nail making it more pliable easier to work with.

2. VERY IMPORTANT STEP! Cut a ';V'; into the middle of the top edge of the nail with some clippers. This takes the pressure OFF of the edges of the nails that are ingrown into the toe. Makes it less painful afterwards too.. Don't worry, it will look a little silly for a while until it grows out enough to clip it nicely again but compared to the pain of an ingrown, who cares?! File the corners of the ';v'; off to smooth it, after all is done, so you don't snag your socks or anything else.

3. With cuticle clippers, I find these to be easier to work with -less bulky and sharp/strong clipping edges. CAREFULLY lift the edge of the nail that is ingrown with the tip of the clippers, slide it under the loosened edge and clip it at an angle away from the toe. You'll see how to clip with them once you have them in your hands, if I haven't described it good enough.

Wash your toe/feet with soap and water afterwards and put some antibiotic ointment on the area infected and cover with a band-aid. Change the bandage and re apply the ointment as needed.

Hope you find this helpful. I suffer from them too and WOW..sometimes I think there is no pain greater! In the winter when I have to where shoes....ughh.... I keep a small ';v'; in my nail constantly. It reduces my re-occurances 10 fold by the reasons as stated above...it reduces the pressure of the nail along the edge of the toe. What is the best way to remove an ingrown toe nail from home?
use a small cuticle nipper. you can buy it at CVS, wallgreens. and i know it's gonna hurt after you take it out, what i usually do i wash it with hydrogen peroxide.
first take and ice pack and ice your toe. then try to get under the nail with a pointed file and pull out the edge that hurts. Use a cuticle nipper or nail scissors to cut off the excess nail. it's gonna hurt but the ice will help. I usually have to do mine in a two step process because I'm a big baby.
you will need tweezers %26amp; cotton balls.

using the tweezers, shove small pieces of cotton under the corners of the nail (ingrown areas)

it forces the nail up. a doctor showed me this when i had that problem. you can leave the cotton in %26amp; forget about it, redo as needed. you will feel relief soon!
